Built in 1780, St Enoch's Church, erected on the site of a much older chapel to Mungo's mother, was the focal point of St Enoch Square. As the city developed, traffic grew and the vast St Enoch's Railway Station and Hotel, then to the east of the square, only increased this congestion.

A plan to remove the Church to improve traffic flow met with considerable objection; The Old Glasgow Club was at the forefront of the fight. Ultimately, the battle was lost and the St Enoch's Church was demolished. A final Service was held in the Church in 1925 and The Old Glasgow Club has now erected a Blue Plaque to commemorate the centenary of event.
